"What could be more meaningful than following in the footsteps of Carol Lurie, a founder of JDRF?

Carol Lurie, along with her husband Erwin, Lee Ducat, and a few select, passionate parents, founded JDRF in 1970. Carol’s name evokes power—it represents an unwavering commitment that has impacted the lives of millions of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Her name also represents the extraordinary legacy of an individual who inspired those around her to improve the life of someone she loved—her son Stephen. For all and for one, she moved men and women, research organizations, and governments to support T1D research.

Carol passed away on February 15, 2013, at the age of 84, but her legacy continues. We will not rest—not until there is a world without T1D. Inspire others to follow in her footsteps and donate to the Carol Lurie Memorial Fund. Every effort you make will support what Carol started more than 40 years ago. Let’s take her inspiration into our hearts and work together toward JDRF’s goals to bring
life-changing therapies and ultimately a cure to all those living with T1D.

Please encourage everyone in your chapter to pay tribute by donating to the
Carol Lurie Memorial Fund."

After a long time I am back and the story of where I've been!

OK , Let's see it was about 1/2012 when I was last here.Soooo let's think of those fade outs in the movie's....fading!!!........

OK It's now Oct. 2011 and at the Endo. because my diabetes has done a very strange thing!!! After 3+ years I am no longer using any insulin except once in a while for correction. I ask my Dr. (I am a US Veteran and that medical system) for a C-pep. Well those results are the reason for the Endo. appt.. The test came back normal!!! How can I be type 1 with a normal C-pep???

Well at this appt. The Dr.(Endo) told I wasn't diabetic anymore!!!! That a this time I am more pre-diabetic. I asked what do you mean? He told me to be dx'ed diabetic you have to treat everyday and since I was treating maybe 2-4x a week I wasn't diabetic.

You could have knocked me over with a feather, I really! After 3+ years of every morning giving myself insulin and doing insulin before I eat and now I am not a diabetic!!! I walked out in a daze! I mean I just lost my membership in Club 1!? I was told at that time I was type unknown!!

In life you have noticed that good and bad seem to balance!? When really good happens a really bad follows and reverse!? That's what happened to me!

Feeling good no longer being diabetic! Then just a whole 2 months later!!! My stomach started to hurt so bad I went to ER. I get admitted because of a blockage. A few days later I am feeling better so they let me go and tell me if I have any pain or vomiting to come back in. Well I lasted a little over 12 hrs. and I started to vomit a lot! Back to ER I go, what fun this is as it's New Years Eve. Well after throwing up all over ER! LOL I got admitted again. This time they tell me they need to look inside. Oh, just great New Years Eve and I get to start 2012 having surgery.

They take me in, out I go. I wake up and get told they found some strange flap thing in with my small bowel and removed appox. 12 inches. So now I have a line starting at the top of my bellybutton ending at the at the v in my rib cage and looking like railroad tracks. Whoa what a scar this is going to be!

Well it's been 2 weeks and I haven't eaten any food solid or liquid. Now I have finally passed gas, this more important than you know. After this fun time I have a new understanding of just how important passing gas is!!! I have just finished eating my 1st solid food in 2 weeks, take some oral pain meds. and then......Bang I get with the most pain I have ever felt. I am doubled over and call the nurse. This nurse said Sir you have hardly used any pain meds. are you sure!! Yes Please help me! Well this little angel(to me!!) said I'll be right back. She comes back with morphine and tells me she called the Dr. and she is on her way in. and can I walk to x-ray, no I said. After x-ray another shot of morphine. That dang stuff works but this guy throws up every time they give me some! Not fun. LOL The pain is gone and I close my eyes.

Then I hear my name, opening my eyes there is the Dr.. She tells they found fluid in the x-ray and have to back inside!! I look at her Oh, great I bet this is really going to hurt! Off I go back into the OR. Out I go,waking up. They ask me a bunch of questions and tell what's happened and tell me I am going to ICU. My only thought was Perfect, the only 2x I've been in a hospital and both times I end up in ICU(The other was when I was dx'ed type 1) To make it short I was told they had to remove a 1 liter blood clot and give me 2 liters of blood.

It was 3 weeks before I finally got solid food. I went from 175 to under 150!! I am 6 feet tall so you can see I was just skin and bones. This also didn't help my diabetes! Now I am back on insulin, mind you I use so little. I take a whole 12 units of Lantus in the evening and about 1 unit of Novolg for 10 -15 grams carbs. and have now been dx'ed type 1.5

Now so other bad and good. Since around the middle of 2009 I started to have real problems with neuropathy in my feet and lower legs. This was not good as I was homeless and unemployed. It is so bad I applied for disability and was denied 2 times. On my 3rd appeal and a trip court I was declared 100% disable and have been disabled since 2009.. Well I am no longer homeless and have an income I can live on if I am careful. The bad I am disabled!!! Heck I am only 57 also the Dr.'s have told me I am worn out. So far this is the updated list. Type 1.5 diabetes, diabetic neuropathy severe arthritis in both feet, left hand, left base of thumb, left wrist and lower back, right shoulder needs to be replaced and the newest and a favorite of mine fibromyalia.

Well there you have it why I haven't been here in a while. But I am back!!!

Carol Lurie Founder of JDRF passed away

Carol Lurie, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, and a founder of

If you are interested in sharing your story, please reply to this subject or send me a personal message. Mostly because I didn't need to treat everyday and a normal C-pep test. Then they tell I am diabetic type unknown!! OK, great I guess?? Well the life punch was about 2 months after that news, I end up going to ER for surgery. Long story short, removed part small bowel, then again a week later for a 1 liter blood clot!! Lucky me I get to spend the 1st 3 weeks of 2012 in the hospital. Now less than 2 months after that diabetes throws the punch. I think going from 171 lbs. to 148.5 lbs. and gaining my weight back in 6 weeks messed up my diabetes. In the last 2 weeks my numbers started to go up. I started seeing 200+ and then last week I saw a couple of 300+. Due to my not needing much insulin ( I had only been needing my short acting for corrections) I only had 1 bottle of insulin, not good!! Off to the Dr.'s and got myself some long acting, which I haven't used in about a year and another bottle of short. So tomorrow I am going to try some Long acting in the morning. The only good part, I guess my insulin needs are still really low. Only going to try 10 units, when I was 1st dx'ed I used 30 units for over 2 years. Dang life and diabetes!!! LOL So weird!!

Needing some help!

Alright guy's,

But it's a difficult community for someone struggling to not develop type 2. (I've hung out at a 5.9 a1c for the past year and a half.) This community is sooo judgmental. People in this community seem to totally disregard that genetics play a component in type 2. Some people could weigh 500 pounds and never develop diabetes. Some people like little old me can look pleasantly plump ;), be cursed with two type 2 parents, be injured and unable to exercise for so long (not just making excuses---had a 3-hour hip surgery this fall), and still be fighting the numbers. I've been one of the healthiest eaters you could imagine for years and years. But the frequent comments on this list make all types 2 sound like slovenly, overweight, ignorant, insensitive slobs.

I am feeling hurt and judged by the constant random comments in this type 1 community.

I've just weighing whether remaining in the community or even peeking in is worth it. I'm taking just a break on the internet for a few minutes, and I end up in tears because of comments about type 2s that I stumble upon. I am not the media that doesn't understand the difference between the two types and contributes to continued confusion on the part of the general public. I'm don't eat the Standard American Diet that does so many people in. I'm a good, smart person with bad genes who's trying hard, but Juvenation makes me feel horrible.

My New Years 2012 and 1st surgery

So Happy!!! It's been almost 48 hours I've been out of the Hospital! This is My New Years 2012!!!!

The Fri. before this New Years weekend. It's been 3 days now of nothing but a severe pain in my stomach!!! I need to go to ER!!!! ER, I get admitted, X-rays, the Dr.'s have found a blockage!!! in my small bowels. They put in an NG tube and start to pump my stomach out. This in not very much fun!!!! After pumping and pain meds. Starting to feel better. Remove tube, clear liquids, then food. after 3 days I go home. 10 hours later I am back in ER, they had told me if you started to throw up/severe pain, get back in fast!!! Well that's what happened! Readmitted and in a bed now. Now it's been about 3-4 days no food!!! Again with that stupid NG tube up my nose!! It took 5 tries to get it in!!! And hurt so much. Now the Dr.'s tell me They going to look inside! They put me on a special bed and take me to OR. They explain what they are going to do and what could happen!!! I sign paper says OK do it! LOL

Waking wake up, I hear "Mr. Johnson can you hear me????? Yes I can! Good I need you to understand what has happened, Can you do that??? Yes! Good, do you know where you are at??? Yes VA Hospital coming out of surgery!! Very Good Mr. Johnson!!! OK They had to remove part of your small bowel and resection! Do you understand??? Yes I understand!!!! My next thought was I am going to have a good scar! I get transfered to a regular bed. Now here comes the Dr.'s. Hi Mr. Johnson How do you feel??? Pretty good just hurting!!! What is the pain like?? Feels like someone has just cut me open!!! Very Good Mr. Johnson!!! WE had to remove appox 12 inches of your small bowel and resection. OK I now have a scar going from the bottom center of my rib cage to the top of my belly button and it's closed with staples!!! Looks like railroad tracks!!! LOL By now I am on a pain pump, my friend! I hit the button a few seconds later, relief, wait 10 mins and hit button again. after about an hour I call the nurse and ask if I can get up and walk. They disconnect my Iv and I go for a little walk!!! It felt good! Over the next few days I kept walking!!!

Now it's been 7 days I've eaten clear liquids(2 meals) They were not diabetic nice!! I told them this diet will raise my bs high!!! I eat my bs goes up to 200+. My diabetes control is very important to me , so I have my kit with me!!! Don't leave home without even in the hospital!!!! LOL So I fix myself a correction!!! 2 units Novolg and tell them what I did. Weeelll this caused quite a stink!!!!!! They didn't like me giving myself insulin!!! And I did a second correction. Now comes the war!!!! LOL Since they have been testing my bs every 6 hours the diabetes educator comes to see me!!!

The visit!!! The 1st thing she says is "the endo wants you to start long insulin(Lantus). At this point I kind of blew up!!!! I have been type 1 for almost 4 years now, taking care of MY DIABETES!!!!! I have only seen this endo twice the whole 4 years and the first was only a couple of months ago!!!!! Long insulin are you crazy!!!!!!! That will only cause me to go low!!!!!! I am not going low!!!!!!!! I refused the insulin. And we came to a comprise. I keep my insulin but gave up my needles!!!!! and if I need some they will bring me a needle for my use!!!! Nobody is going to mess with my control, nobody after all it's My Diabetes!!!!!!!!!!!! MY DIABETES!!!!!!!!

My bs were good!!!! the whole time!

Now comes the really bad part!!!! What a special New Years for me!!!!!

It's been 7 days after my surgery. Got thru clear liquids, semi-solid liquids and now I am eating my first solid food of the New Year!!!! Over 7 days and my 1st solid food. I am so out of here. LOL Doing good and now I am off the pain pump, no more tubes!!! I get my 1st oral pain med!!!! OK so out of here!!!!

30 mins later, PAIN like I have never felt before. Most pain in my life!!!!! I am 55 years old!!! I call the nurse and tell her, Please I need something the pain is so bad!!!!!! She OKI 'll call the Dr.!!! What that nurse did next I am sure helped save me!!!! That nurse is my personal Hero!!!!! So perfect what she did!!!!!! Sorry got to go cry a little!!!!!!!

OK better!!! So she calls the Dr. and tells them you had better get here quick there is something very wrong!!!!! This man never complains about pain and in severe pain Now!!!!! She come back to me and tells me what she did. A shot of morphine in the old iv and I start to feel some relief!!! next I am being taken to x-ray. Back from x-ray, more pain meds, I close my eyes. Mr. Johnson, I open my eyes and there is the Dr.. Mr Johnson we found fluid in the x-ray and need to take you back to surgery!!! Oh Great!!! I bet this is going to hurt, but OK. Now I am being put on an OR bed and taken to OR. They again explain what is about to happen, sign forms for surgery!!! I go out!!!!

Waking up, i realize I am being moved. Wow surgery is over!!! Mr. Johnson can you hear me???? Yes. I can hear you. Good I need you to listen to what I am about to say, Can you do that??? Yes! OK Good, do you know where you are at???? Yes VA hospital. very good Mr. Johnson!!! Ok you had to have a 1 liter blood clot removed!! Do you understand???? Yes you removed a blood clot. Very good Mr. Johnson!!! they also gave you 2 liters of blood and you're going to ICU !!! Wow my next thought was, ICU! The last time I was at this very same VA Hospital in Aug./08 I was in ICU being dx'ed type 1 diabetic!!!!!!!!! So both times I have been overnight in this hospital I ended up in ICU!!!!! Aren't I just the lucky one!!!!!! LOL

I am now in ICU laying there tubes, wires going in and out of me!!! A screen with running graphs, o2, heart rate, EKG, Breathing rate and blood pressure. Also at this time I think I've been poked with every kind of needle they had!!!!! LOL The ICU nurse starts asking me how I feel. I hurt I said What is the pain like??? Told him it felt like I had been cut open twice, LOL Yes I did laugh!!!!! Good we'll take care of that!!! Shot in the old iv and I start to feel relief!!! Closed my for just a second and I hear MR. Johnson!!! I open my eyes to see a bunch of Dr.'s and the head Dr. says How are you feeling??? Again I said I feel like someone who's been cut open twice, kind of hurts like you think it would!!!! Very good Mr. Johnson! They go and explain what happened in the OR. Opened up again, found 1 liter blood clot and removed, gave me 2 liters of blood, couldn't find any leak and lot's of scar tissue for just 7 days after 1st surgery!!! Guess I heal fast!!! LOL

I only was in ICU about 6 hours!!! The nurse told me I don't need to be here and there moving me to regular bed!!!! I am now in regular bed, and the first thing I did??? Called for a nurse and asked to be disconnected so I could take a walk. I guess I really like walking!!! It help make feel better.

Now it's been over 2 weeks and no solid food. The Dr. comes in tells me I need some kind of special iv that will allow me to get food by iv. Oh what fun this New Year has been so far!!!! Get that done, I now have a tube that puts stuff right into my heart!!!!! Werid LOL Now my food?? is special made each morning after my blood tests!!! See Lucky ME!!!!

Almost 3 weeks, I am now able to get clear food, 2 days now I can have my 1st solid food in 3 weeks, turkey, stuffing, etc... Only ate a little, but I ate, finally looks like I am getting out!!! Looking in a mirror I see this Really skinny man looking at me!!! Bones everywhere. Not very pretty to say the least!!! I ask if I can get my weight. When I went in I was 171, 6 feet tall and 55 years old. Well when they weighted me I was less than 150, 148 something!!!! OH, Wow I had lost of 20 lbs!!!!

To BE!!!!!!

07/2008:

I am laying on my parents couch, because of drugs I had lost another, good job (50,000+) !!!!!! 52 years old and nothing!!! So I asked for just a little help. Take for what you want I remember it So Clear. "Lord I know I never asked for anything from you, but I ask you now because I am not strong enough by myself, Please, Don't let go that way again!!!, any help a all" Well to me it seemed to be answered by that little saying careful what you asked for!!!!!!

Almost aug./2008:

I woke up and rubbed my eyes and again. Wow, that's strange I can't see a thing the world is just so damn fuzzy. Can't let that stop me have job interview!!!! Parents are giving my a ride. It's kind a trip at least a few hours there and back. An hour in I am having to pee sooooo bad!!! And I had just went before we left. Oh, I don't even have time to ask them to stop, bottle time (throw away at 1st stop!!!). I must be coming down with something feels like the flu!!!! Over the next couple of days thing got worse!!!!! Soooo Tried!!!!!! I just knew if I didn't have to get EVERY hour and pee I could get rested. LOL kind of funny now!!!! to me.

03/08/2008:

So sick nothing tastes right, I can't taste sweet now. Soda has no sweet!!! Again I prayed "Lord, I feel so bad HELP" A few hours later after finally finding something that tasted sweet some juice place, back home outside smoking. I swear now what I am about to say is what I remember!!! Smoking I asked "one word" Lord??" Then as clear as, I don't know just very clear!!! One thought pops into my head "Check your blood sugar" Now I promise on my very soul!!! I knew hardly anything about Diabetes of any type!!!!!!! I knew about blood sugar because my Mom was Type 2. 4 foot 10 and over 350!!!!! Do I hear stereotype???? LOL

So I go inside and tell her what had just happened!!! Well here use mine!! Of course I had used it before Who doesn't want you to check their BS with fancy meter!!! LOL

Well, that was my 1st step. That stupid meter didn't give me a number, NOOOOOOOOOOOO all it kept blinking was "! HI, ! H,etc" up to this point all I knew was over 150 isn't good!!!! LOL This can't be good!! Well Mom looks like I need a ride to the Veterans Hospital!!!!

Entering, I look around the place is packed!!! Oh, man this is going to be awhile!!! Tell the admitting tech, can't see, peeing (you know!), used bs meter and got" ! HI" It seemed in just a few minutes they where calling my name!!! Wow that's fast!!!!! not even 10 minutes and the place is busy!!! See not one clue about what was going to happen to me!!!! Not a clue!!!!! In the back same story, tell tech. Well here let me check you with my meter. And guess what he's meter did the same thing my mom's did!!!! "! HI" With a Ohhhh, the tech goes I'll be right back!!! Wow what service!!! There really taking care of me!!!! (LOL Seems so funny, NOW!!) He returns with 2 IV's, Fluids running in me now!!! He stands up and says sir someone will here in just a second to take you upstairs. OK, now that's fast!!! excuse me, I asked where I am I going my Uncle is in the waiting room! Again, something that I remember very clear!!! You, sir are going to ICU, you're a very sick man!!!!! WTF!!!!!

What's that I asked? Insulin is what she said!!!! The Dr.'s will be here in a minute!!! INSULIN isn't that the stuff those people who get parts cut off use!!!! Like I said NOT A CLUE!!!!!!!!!!! The screen get pulled back and Dr. says The endocrinologist has diagnosed you "type 1 diabetic" They use to call juvenile diabetes!!! Being the the ever quick one my replay was "must be the kid inside, can you take him out?" LOL yes I love laughing!!!

I tell the nurse I now know this is going to be of my life from now on!!!! and my I give it to myself!!! she said sure she drew it for me And I did it!!!! That mean's in my diabetes treatment I have had only one insulin shot, by someone other than me!!!!!!!

12 hours later they wheel me out of ICU. Insulin did me good!!!!! Next comes a flood of info. Learning about food in a whole new way, long insulin. short insulin and bunches of (Sorry if if this upsets anyone, my story) type 2 crud that helped for poo!!!!!

FDA’s Draft Guidance Is A First Step to Providing Access to Life-Saving Technology for Millions with Type 1 Diabetes

Washington, D.C. – The JDRF today said it is encouraged that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a draft guidance which appears to lay a foundation for accelerating the development and availability of artificial pancreas technology (AP) that will improve the lives of millions of Americans living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

“Our initial review of the draft AP guidance indicates that the FDA has been responsive and listened to the recommendations of leading clinicians and researchers in the type 1 diabetes field," said Jeffrey Brewer, President and CEO of JDRF. "It also appears that the draft guidance lays out a rapid timetable to move from inpatient trials to outpatient trials to prove the AP's safety and efficacy, and if that turns out to be the case it is good news."

Artificial pancreas technologies have the potential to be the most revolutionary advance in treating T1D since the discovery of insulin. They will allow the millions of Americans with T1D to maintain tighter control of blood glucose levels, thus significantly reducing the risk of both high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which can cause long-term complications including heart disease, blindness and stroke, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can be life-threatening. It would also free them from much of the daily burden of managing the disease.

In 2006, the FDA added artificial pancreas technology to its Critical Path list, making a commitment to advance these systems. The draft guidance is the first step to getting the technology to those in dire need.

“To be sure, we have a ways to go before AP technologies are available to patients but this draft guidance suggests that Commissioner Hamburg and the FDA are committed to fostering innovation and being a global leader in bringing life-saving technologies for T1D patients to the U.S market," said Brewer. "In the next few weeks, we will review the draft guidance in detail and provide detailed comments to the FDA so that the final guidance unmistakably lays out the pathway to put AP technologies in patient's hands as soon as possible. In the end, that is what this is all about."

About the Artificial Pancreas

The artificial pancreas (AP) is an external device which people with T1D could use to do what their bodies cannot—control both high and low blood sugar around the clock. It works by combining a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump with sophisticated computer software to provide automatically the right amount of insulin at the right time.

One of JDRF’s top priorities is the development of the AP. JDRF-funded studies have shown greatly improved clinical outcomes from early trials of prototype AP systems. FDA’s guidance on artificial pancreas systems will allow for these systems to be further developed, tested in outpatient pivotal trials, and eventually approved for people with T1D.

An overwhelming amount of support from researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and patients called on the FDA to advance the development of an AP. Over 100,000 people in the diabetes community signed JDRF’s petition which urged the FDA to adopt clear guidance, and leading clinical organizations specializing in diabetes care urged the FDA to ensure that the development of an artificial pancreas is not delayed by unnecessary regulatory roadblocks. Furthermore, Congress demonstrated vast support for a reasonable and timely guidance from FDA, with 252 Representatives and 62 Senators having urged the FDA to act in the best interest of type 1 diabetes patients.

About JDRF

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF is to improve the lives of every person affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners who share this goal. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to T1D research. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. Past JDRF research efforts have helped to significantly improve the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered.
