  • While I do wish to see a cure in my lifetime I am not getting my hopes up. People are working on lots of cures right now, so who knows what will be the first one found.... The person who may discover the cure may not even be born yet...

And if one is found, T1 will always be a part of my life that I struggle(d) with... I will never regret my tattoo... (which i got yesterday!)

  • Good for you Courtney. I do feel the same way. My comment was only ment to bring a chuckle. I have been waiting a long time for a cure myself, and have little faith that a cure is close. Tattoos have become a very popular means of people to express them selves. I am a creature of some old habits, and have been wearing the same medic alert necklace for over 30 years. Can't seem to think of not needing it. I would like to think, that if I am ever in an EMT situation, my pump, cgm or infussion site would give a clue to the EMT.

No disrespect intended. Congrats on your new tattoo!!

  • I also think that my pump would hopefully be a clue but I have had enough people seriously ask me if it was a beeper that I question if people would really know what was going on if I passed out or something. LOL. I'm sure an EMT would figure it out but a bystander may not....

Here's how it turned out (still healing though!)

What will you all do, when Diabetes is cured LOL

My mom asked the same question after she saw that I got a diabetes tattoo. My tattoo has the date I was diagnosed and I told her that when I get cured I will put that date underneath. Problem solved :)

    Diagnosed at 19 on February 21, 2009.

I am on a Animas OneTouch Ping since July 2009.

  • I like that idea

  • are employers really against them? i dont agree with that since its not just any tattoo.. but i guess they have their rules... i want one sooooo badly but my mom wont let me get one... Jed i would put cured and the date i was cured under it...

  • I have a tattoo on my wrist, and work in an professional office setting and I havent ever had a problem. I sometimes cover it with a watch, but even after close to a year I have people who see me every day point out that they just noticed the tattoo. So I wouldn't really worry about that with your job. Its easy to hide if needed.

  • I'm on the fence here.

I admire body art, but I can't quite picture it on my daughter. However, there are real practical advantages to having a diabetes tattoo when you refuse to wear a medical ID bracelet. I've even offered to bribe her this year to wear a diabetes bracelet recently.

There's still social stigma associated with tattoos - which is what makes it so attractive to some people. And it also forces those who have chosen to get a tattoo to have to hide it at times (at work).

At the end of the day, it's the permanence of a diabetes tattoo that still gives me pause. Here's what I wrote about it several years ago: http://www.daddybetes.com/2010/03/diabetes-tattoos.html

    ~ Red

  • I am planning to get a medic alert tattoo in the near future. Mine will be a dime-sized red star of life on the outside of my wrist, and the word "DIABETIC" on the inside. Very simple. I am going to go talk to the local emts and see if they have any suggested alterations to the design first, tho.

As for when diabetes is cured, that is what I am most looking forward to -- add a penmark-looking strikethrough over the "diabetic" and add "cured" directly below it. I cannot wait to wear that forever!

I've been type one for 20 years now and have worn a medic alert bracelet for a good chunk of that. Mine is simple, with no addition info other than "type 1 diabetes" so this isn't loosing any info. Mostly I hate the bracelet because 1) I can't wear any other bracelets on that wrist and 2) it is constantly grinding into my wrist as I type and use the mouse. It is annoying as hell, and I hate it.
