My son is almost 8. His fingers are full of poke marks and sore from pokes. I have tried forearms and palms and don't get much blood. In general, he is scared of trying a new poking site. But I am interested to know which places on the body any of you have found successful or less painful than fingers.

It is driving me crazy! About every two weeks I have to increase my insulin by ten units or more and then two weeks later I have to drop it back down ten or more units. It is really annoying because in betweent that time I am either really low or really high. :( I am not sure why this is happening, at first I thought that I was going lower because of a honeymoon but then I went back up and down and up and down and up and now down again. I haven't been sick or stressed. I have also been losing sleep because I keep going low during the night. It is getting really hard to concentrate in school with these aweful numbers. I am very frustrated and I hate how I don't have an answer. Any help or advice would be great or even some encouragement.

I am somewhat concerned about what working a full time job with diabetes will be like.

Right now, I am on the OmniPod and checking my blood sugars 8 or so times a day. I will more than likely not be in a 9-5 office situation where I can easily check my blood sugar, grab a snack, or take a break. My job will be on my feet and on the go.

My question to you all in a similar situation is, how do you manage working with diabetes? How do you tell your potential boss about your needs?

Thanks!!

favorite blood glucose monitor?

I have 8 (count 'em!) 8 meters all over my house.
But this community really helped turn that around. I've been gone for a while but I am back to say WOW! My ha1c was 8.6 when I started here. So much has happened thanks to the inspiration I found here.

So when I started I often went up to 400s and 500s about once every 3 weeks. It felt bad to say the least. But I slowly got them leveled out to now 300s once ever 3 weeks. GREAT start. So after a few months here I got my a1c down to 7.6! It took an upward slide thanks to stress up to 8.4 again =( it was a little sad but I knew it was just a number not a score.

During this time on the site I was following and keeping posts about Team Type 1, the diabetic bike racing team. What really inspired me about them was not just the fact that they were winning championship cross country races but that they also started Team Type 2 the non professional team that races in the same race as them. This along with the conversations on this site slowly started changing my perception of type 2 diabetes as a disease and a cultural phenomenon. I decided to change my perception of this as blaming the individuals for their condition to blaming a culture that is pushing natural processes in the body too fast. After all, in 2050 when almost 1/2 the people in America have this disease it can not be denied our culture needs a change.

Ultimately these racers changed my thoughts on my own disease from something I just need to live with to something that can inspire. Over the next few months as a struggled with my other life decisions I came to the conclusion that I need to get into diabetes education. Go to school again and get a BSN. It won't be easy. After all I got a 3 on my math section of my ACT if anyone wants to know... I suck at math.

So to start off I did something amazing now just before I start the nursing program. I got my A1C down to 6.4.

o.O who would have thunk it? I didn't even try hard. That is the lowest it has been in 5 years. I don't believe in divinity but I'll take it as a sign from my self that I have made the right decision and continue to try to inspire.

Choosing the right Meter and Lancing Device

Hello,

Lately, I have had this thing going on where I have small-moderate levels of ketones with normal blood sugar readings. I don't usually feel sick either. I will check when I have some symptoms, fruity breath etc. I check my ketones with ketostix.

Tonight, I had the sweet breath symptom, so I used ketostix (2 of them to reassure) and it they both read at the moderate level.

This should not be an issue of not eating enough carbs... I eat plenty!

It's a little device that plugs in to your iPhone and you use regular old teststrips and it read your level. SO, iPhone will officially be turned in to a glucometer, where you can then upload your levels to your doctor and log it and all that fun stuff IN YOUR iPHONE! Diabetes makes a cool, comeback! No longer must we be the wierdos with the funny looking machine. That's right, our iPhones will suffice, probably surpass what we are all used to now. I don't know about you, but I'm signing up. Should be available to the public in 2011. I tried to go online to different websites that say they will ship them to you for free but all of them require you to be on medicaid or have some type of insurance. I feel trapped and very upset. If you know some place that could help me please let me know. Or if someone has the same monitor as me and could help me out, I will be forever grateful. I don't have a lot of money because of the economy and My husband lost his job in july. I need to get help soon. I am sorry for all of this. I hate asking people for help but please I am not doing to well I have no way of knowing what my blood sugar is and its getting harder every day. I thank you all for reading this and I know you all will understand. Please let me know....

I have a calorie-king carb counting book, but I think I may need to try dual-wave or square-wave boluses for these meals.

Has anyone had any success with these methods of pumping?..especially for foods like these?

I KNOW...) and she gave me a blood sugar monitor (I hadn't tested for months... I KNOW!!...).

Anyways- I started testing yesterday and my blood sugars have been consistently high. All day today they have ranged between 200-390, and that has been with little food and lots of insulin. I tested an hour ago and it was 515! I took 20 units of humalog and tested again just now and it was 392.

My last A1C was 10.7 (last week) and I'm thinking since I haven't kept a very close watch on things there may be something more serious going on... but it seems like every time I think something is serious and I go to the ER they pump me full of fluids and send me home with a HUGE bill.

Should I wait it out or should I pack a bag and head to the hospital?

Ten Reasons To Test Blood Sugar

A good article from Diabetes Health.

http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/2010/08/03/6793/ten-reasons-to-test-your-blood-sugar/

finger and foot care advice

Would you please share your daily finger and foot care advice? I typically use whatever lotion is on sale when I remember to apply it, would anyone recommend some good lotion brands for diabetic fingers and feet? I have seen diabetiderm or similar lotions at the pharmacy, would anyone recommend these or are there others that are better?

I'll Take "Ups & Downs" For $1000, Alex

I was speaking with a fellow type 1, recently. She and I were talking about things that impact our BGs in strange ways.

Here are some things that tend to drop my BG levels:

When I get nervous (I don't usually get nervous. When I do, it's because I feel unprepared for something)

Drinking beer

Golfing (I know it's not THAT strange, but it's not like I'm doing aerobic exercise)

Laughing/Being in a great mood for extended periods of time (this one is very strange to me. I think I understand it, but it's still strange)

Sadness/Crying (not to be confused with depression)

These are the things, that I've noticed, that may make my BGs higher:

Being sick (most of us know this one, but it's strange when it happens)

Anger

Depression

Flying (I'm not afraid of flying, and I don't have any anxiousness towards flying, but I have noticed my BGs go up after landing...weird)

Working at my desk for extended periods of time (I'm sure this is due to inactivity. I still find it strange)

So, what are some things that effect you with ups & downs?

Is the doctor nuts or am I???

How often do you all check your blood sugar & how often do you think it is appropriate to check an 18 month old on a normal basis (not sick, ect.)

Benjamin was very sick this past week & we ended up spending a few nights at the hospital. He wouldn't eat or drink so he needed an iv. He is going great now & that is not why I am posting just wanted you to know the background :).

While we were there I encountered a resident that seemed very uninformed about diabetes. He asked me how often I check Benjamins bs & I said usually 8 times a day (am, mid morning, lunch, mid afternoon, supper, bedtime for him, bedtime for me, and once during the night). This doctor acted like I was a really overprotective mother who was putting her son through unnecessary pokes. (Yes he actually said that!) He recommended that I only needed to check 3 maybe 4 times a day unless I was seeing symptoms of a low.

So be honest with me...am I checking to often???

(I am still checking that often & I plan to discuss it with our endo the next time we talk)

Thanks!

I think they are pretty awesome, and I'm not a fan of tattoos. I really wish that they were moving quicker to get them out to the public though, I mean I was talking to my mom about them and she said that if they were available, I'd be getting a tatoo today. Also, has anyone heard about the Solo pump? I'm having no luck getting the omnipod with my insurance, so I'm looking at other pumps that are also available and I came across this one. If anyone has any more information on this new technology, I'm extremely interested in it.

morning number

Hi everyone! I'm curious of what your morning sugar levels are, to get a general idea of your "norm". My son's have been a bit high lately, and I'm wondering if he is coming out of his honeymoon. Also...he has been having some crazy rebounds after treating lows.
