I'll be in Germany and France, and I don't speak either language very well. I'm looking for recommendations for learning/referring to key T1 related phrases? I came across the Freedom to Travel series. Has anyone had positive experiences with that, or would you recommend something else?

Any other advice, in general? I'll be traveling with (or, rather, meeting) a friend who has lived in Europe for years and is fluent in multiple languages, so I'll have someone who has my back once I get there. I contacted my doctor and, in addition to the travel letter and copies of prescriptions I always get when I travel, they're going to give me some extra bottles of insulin - I use a pump and apparently the shape of the vials is different in other countries, and might not be compatible with the reservoirs I use. I've always had good luck going through airport security when flying domestically - are there any added challenges when going through customs and/or security in other countries?

It's the Medtronic Minimed one, which is only "water resistant". I haven't been to a water park since I was diagnosed over 5 years ago.
So I am currently 21 years old. What a great time to party it up right? But diabetes makes me really, REALLY nervous about going downtown with friends. So much so that I have missed out on some good nights because I am to nervous about my numbers!

I know that your blood sugar can get pretty low because your liver stops workin for you for a while. But what if you are drinking really sugar drinks? Are there drinks that are good and drinks that are bad.

When you guys go out, how often do you check and how much insulin do you give yourself from getting high and how do you keep from getting low later?! It's my roommates 23 birthday on Friday and the beginning of spring break and I would really like to celebrate with everyone!

I DON'T WANT DIABETES TO GET IN THE WAY OF MY LIFE!

Help me out fellow diabetics! Any good articles or books to read or any advice from those of you with experience?

Thanks!

Im suppose to be taking 10 units if Im under 80 and going to eat and they moved my sliding scale to start at 200... 200 is really high for me and so my blood sugar was way way too high during my entire stay... grrr doctors... the good thing is I see my endo on monday and Im going to talk to her and see what we can do to talk put a note in my file saying that I can self medicate my insulin... because unfortunatly I have to go in for heart surgery next week... has anyone else had issues in the hospital?

Happy Birthday!
I got my wife a foot massager and as a good husband thought I would get use of it too (lol). Big bold letters in the manual "Do not use in case of pregnancy diabetes, pacemaker use..." What!! I have used it (when my wife lets me) and it is good.

Anyway, just wondering how everyone went with their presies?

However I have made discovery that I wish I would have figured out about 2 weeks ago!

So for the past 2 weeks I have dealt with high sugars spiking at exactly the same time every night, 12am- my blood sugar is exactly 300. So at 11 pm every night I have been taking 5 units via syringe. So last night I was up real late staring at my pump, perusing and reviewing through my basal rates for the umteenthmillionth time and I stopped at the 3am number.

My 3am rate it a lot higher because for a few hours because I have a fairly hefty "dawn phenomenon." As some of you may know the dawn phenomenon occurs in some diabetics. It is generally believed to be due to the natural overnight release of hormones growth hormones, cortisol, glucagon and epinephrine (and I dare say some other hormones due to stress)- that increase insulin resistance.

Unlike your sleep cycle which resets every 2 weeks your hormone cycles reset every few months! So while my sleep cycle has caught up with the 3 hour time difference from the east coast and the west coast- my hormone cycle hasn't!! So exactly the same time as Eastern time 3am/ 12am Pacific time I am having my spike!! While I wish that I had discovered this earlier I am so happy to know it now!

So if you have the dawn phenomenon and travel far enough west by plane/car you can't just adjust the time on your basal rate you may also have to take into account that your hormone cycle changes much slower then the rest of you does! And keep your dawn effect dose at the same time.

The only worry some thing would be if i were to move out here- as my hormone cycle adjusts would I experience lows as my dawn phenomenon moves closer to dawn?

Traveling

As some of you may know I have been traveling across the country for a over a month now, living out of my car, and visiting schools, and potential places to live. It is one of the best experiences of my life! We haven't been Jack Kerouac in style, but pretty cheap.

There are a few things i have learned along the way that i think would be pertenent to who ever is interested in travel here. One is Adjusting insulin to this lifestyle. It ain't easy. In reality you need around 3 different long acking or basal rates for this type of journy- This is why i am VERY thankful for the minimed's 3 pattern system. Here are my 3 major patern types. Lower pettern- this is for when you are out and about running around outside of your car, maybe hiking, traveling by foot, sightseeing. Any of those things where you won't be near your car for a while. The next is Higher patter- This is for the long-hall when you are in your car ALL DAY. For a general rule- in the car for more then 4 hours you need higher pattern- for me about %40 higher then the Middle Pattern. Middle Pattern, this is for a mixed grab bag sort of day. The dose should be right in the middle of the other two patterns. Don't be afraid of adjustable basles and use them often!

Another of the Important things That has been reinforced by my kidneys and high readings is the importance of water. Drink lots of it. This has one BIG draw back though when you are traveling. having to go pee. OMG there have been times when I didn't think I was going to make it. However I can go like a bear in the woods, I'm not to shy, but in the city it is a little bit tricker. Dehydration has been acountable for around 80% of my continued high reading- the ones that don't react to insulin or don't want to go lower then 200.

Lastly- exercise- get it EVERY DAY. I don't care if you run around your car in circles or just out and dance when you get to a pull off. But you HAVE to exercise. Otherwise you will have to go home- and you don't want to do that! Think Butt Crunches =)

Well that is all for now. I have some more to say but i have GOT to get going!! So long! anybody keeping track I am heading south from Seattle tomorrow!

BUT

There was no table for Juvenation! I talked to a few people about it, and they were like whatever. That's not cool! If you are doing a local walk, see if we can set up an info table for Juvenation!

Do it!!!
