Meet Aron who was diagnosed with T1D in 1983.

I was recently diagnosed with type 1, June 11, 1983 (I was twelve). Well, more recently than some, anyhow. At the time of my diagnosis, I was told that I had to figure out a day that worked, and cookie-cutter every other day around that day, or I’d not likely live past forty. More than that, I knew I wasn’t willing to wrap my life around a disease.

It wasn’t until I reached my thirties that I realized I was in pretty good shape. D-management science had evolved and it seemed that those early predictions may have been flawed. The idea of a family became more appealing. It was around this time I met a beautiful girl, the old-fashioned way, (internet dating site) fell in love and got married. Next thing I knew, there we were, the three of us, me, my wife and my diabetes, talking about having children.

Blink twice…and it was our first night home with our first child. My wife had to deal with a newborn who desperately wanted to breastfeed and a spouse whose schedule changes left him with nighttime hypoglycemic reactions. Treat the spouse, feed the child; I am always grateful she didn’t decide to feed the kid and leave me on the floor. I’m not convinced I’d have had the fortitude, in those early days of severe sleep deprivation, to do the same. I am certain I’d never have pulled it off with the same grace and seamless style. And still before he hit his second month, we managed to get us all out to the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes and start what is one of our family’s more fun (nearly annual) events.

Thanks to efforts of Gina, JDRF and others, I was able to get my hands on a CGM due to my hypoglycemia unawareness. The new gadget gave my wife some comfort when I was alone with our son but even then, she’d call and check in; making sure her newborn wasn’t in the hands of an impaired d-dad. I did alright, great mostly. It hurt that my wife was living with those concerns, but it is part of the package, in our house.
After a couple of years, we had a second boy…Blink-again.

My boys are now four and six. I love hearing them imitate me. It’s usually “I’m going to take a hammer and fix this” or “let me check my computer.” I found myself catching my breath hearing my youngest say “I need to put on my pod.” *GULP* I wanted to stop him. To date, both boys are d-free but it is always one of my biggest fears. When he said it out loud, I couldn’t even ask him to stop or not say it; just hold the silence hoping not to call attention to it. My eldest has caught me unable to logon to my PC – “MOM – dad’s sugar’s low…” I don’t know what’s next, but so far, all things considered, I’ve been grateful every step of the way.
