Forum Post: AT1 Ice Skating this Sunday at The Washington Harbour

Good afternoon!

Happy New Year (can't believe we're half way through February already)! Just a quick reminder that we are going ice skating this Sunday afternoon at The Washington Harbour. Unfortunately, the weather is not going to be quite as beautiful as today, but it should still be a nice day for a spin around the rink :) I plan to be at the skating rink around 3:30 and will try to wear something that says JDRF on it. Please call or text me if you have trouble finding us (202-494-3640). Significant others and friends are always welcome at AT1 events. If you are on facebook please RSVP to the event on the AT1 page. I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! Just a quick reminder that we have a brunch coming up this Saturday at RiRa in Bethesda (http://www.rira.com/bethesda/) starting at noon. I would like to guage interest in a couple of ideas for our next event ...

1. Ice Skating at The Washington Harbor (http://thewashingtonharbour.com/skating/): we did an ice skating event a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. This is a new ice skating venue and there are lots of places nearby for a drink after we skate.

2. Dogfish Head AleHouse (http://www.dogfishalehouse.com/): would anyone be up to venture to Falls Church for a beer tasting?

Congrats to everyone who walked with Brimley's All-Stars at the DC Walk last weekend! The team has raised over $4,500! A big thanks to Team Captain Sara Pray for all of her work to make this happen.

Staying Connected - new Google Group for e-mail updates & Juvenation Groups

First, some administrative matters ... to more easily keep this e-mail list up to date, I have created a google group for you all to manage your own subscriptions. If you're on facebook and prefer to get your AT1 info there, that's great, but I will be sending event reminders and other updates through the google group. I created the group as an announcements only group so anyone can join and anyone can read the archived messages, but only a few of us will be sending things out. When Does Insulin Go Bad?

A woman goes to the doctor and has an HbA1c of 7.6. The doctor analyzes the last two months and discovers that her blood sugars were 40 mg/dL higher the second month (that's 2.2 mmol).

After talking with the patient, the doctor discovered that the patient had been using Lantus for 40 days, 25% over the recommended length. Clearly, insulin potency matters.

So today let's talk about how long it lasts and what can cause it to go bad.

The general rule is that:

Insulin is good until the expiration date on the bottle.
Opened vials do not need to be refrigerated & last 30 days.
Some older insulins like Novolin last 7 days after opening.

Insulin can last for less time in some cases. For example, freezing it will damage the potency. There are other, harder to track factors can have an impact like exposure to sunlight, agitation of the liquid, and the frequency of drawing insulin from the vial.

The major thing that affects insulin is heat. Most insulin manufacturers recommend that you keep insulin below 86 F / 30 C. Eli Lilly notes that their insulin loses about 1% of potency per month at room temperature. Refrigerated, however, it only loses .1% per month. Above 86 F / 30 C, that degradation accelerates quickly.

Heat is especially a concern if you get your insulin from a mail order source. In the summer, be on the lookout for insulin that may have been left in the sun either during transit or at your home.

Millennium Stage offers a free performance every evening at 6pm. In an effort to add a little variety to our AT1 programming we thought it would be fun to meet for a performance and then anyone who is up for it can grab a drink in Foggy Bottom afterward (we will designate a meet up location when the event gets closer).
