Help for daycare/schooling of a Diabetic Child

  • I can't believe how hard it is to find anyone willing to look after a diabetic child.  The lack of help for ANY and ALL organizations to help with families and even single parents to get help to look after their children.  My fiance who had to quit her job 2 1/2 years ago when her child was first diagnosed.  Just finally went through $2k of training to get work and just started work this week.  To find out her daycare wants $18k over the next 6 months for the "extra" care her child gets.  Her funding ran out that she was getting and is now facing having to quit her job yet again to stay home to look after her child.  How is she suppose to care for her child and not work??   There are no groups in the Greater Vancouver area that seem to want to help.  We can't get ANY answers out of any foundations on where to turn to....  it's sad to think that there are SOOOOO many families in this same situation and everyone turns a blind eye to it.

  • I've heard this is an issue with a lot of parents, in Toronto I know a group of mothers got together with one of the diabetes centres and gathered up youth patients and young adults to make a sort of diabetic babysitting service... I know that's not the full time daycare you are looking for but it's something in the right direction. Maybe ask the Diabetes Education centre you attend if they can point you somewhere, I know of fellow diabetics working in daycares but I'm in Ontario so that's not much help. And I don't agree with the extra costs for "extra" care.

I wish you all the best with this!

  • This is heartbreaking! I have struggled with the cost and lack of support as an adult with t1d and I have also lost my job, have no health insurance that will cover me and no d-centre with group support in my area (scarborough) and it is devestating my family. To hear that there are parents of our young children that cannot retain their livelyhood because the lack of government support is something that is unforgivable. Maybe the government should stop fighting for their free office coffee and start donating those funds to a group that could put it to good use. There must be something better for all of us t1ds than this. Even dogs are treated more humane than we are.
