I'm sure your son has chores around the house and/or rules/expectations that he needs to follow. If he does what is expected, then he is rewarded or praised (i.e - earns an allowance, allowed to stay out later on the weekends, go to the movies/mall with friends, etc). If not, I'm sure he receives some sort of consequence or punishment (i.e. - no cellphone, no allowance, earlier curfew, extra chores, etc) . Its important for the same to happen with his daily diabetes management. Diabetes care is NOT negotiable. As a parent, you are concerned for your child's health, safety, and well-being. DO NOT apologize or feel sorry for him because of his diabetes (though we all know that you are feeling that and thinking that to yourself). Its important for parents to sit down with their child and together, come up with the expectations, goals, rewards, and consequences. Consistency is key. Do not let your child split or use parents against one another and manipulate the situation. They are maasters at that. Set small goals and make sure that the reward and/or punishment is given immediately after the fact. More importantly, make sure your son has say into what his goals/expectations are going to be and that the rewards/punishments are something that will motivate him. For most teens, its cell-phone privledges, driving/car, later curfew, etc. If the reward/punishment is not enticing, then its meaningless to the child. This may mean having to set weekly or shorter term goals/expectations and meeting regularly to evaluate and or update what is being addressed.

Diabetes camps and support groups, as well as on-line sites, such as this one and children with diabetes are good sources for your sonto meet others with diabetes.

Lastly, remember, your son is a teen and diabetes is not important in his life. Diabetes does not "fit in" to a teen's on-the-goal schedule. Stay positve and stay supportive! You're doing a good job by being involved and concerned! :)

Forum Post: Easy way to share info about signs and symptoms of stroke--one more way to put your work into action to benefit patients.

May 2010 focus on stroke: Take two minutes to reach colleagues and patients with ways to prevent stroke--something anyone with diabetes should know.
