I was wondering if anyone was going to a college in Ontario I got accepted to St. Claire College in Windsor, Fanshawe College in London (both for Tourism and Travel), Conestoga College for General Arts and Science, and Georgian College for Early Childhood Education. Still waiting on Sheridan for Travel and Tourism. Maybe one of you will be going to the same one as me. What should I do being away from home with all my Diabetic supplies? If I decide on staying in residence will my roommates make fun of me or will they get that I'm Diabetic or, do something crazy like take my stuff away from me as a joke, which I here stories. If anyone is going to college in Ontario or has ideas for me or just about college in general, it will make me feel better about going into college and being a freshmen.

I just finished my first year of college at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. There are four other schools in town, which make it the 5-College town, with an absurd student population. I know I'm not the only diabetic there, but I was wondering if there are any others that found there way to Juvenation.

So, if you go to:

Amherst College

Hampshire College

Mount Holyoke College

dorm not far from home. She was diagnosed in June 2008. Her diabetes was well
under control until she turned 18 and stopped taking her insulin. She won't agree to allow her parents to know about her health or school, using the HIPPA law as her protection. She had an insulin pump which she has since stopped using, just injecting insulin now. Since she turned 18, she's lost 30 lbs (now
a size 3). Her A1C is over 14, where it has been since at least last fall. And
she continually lied to us about checking her BG and taking her insulin. When her A1C was discovered
to be so high, she was put in the hospital for 3 days in December. She messed up her first
semester, ending on academic probation with a GPA of 0.2. And this is a
scholarship student! She talked her way back into school, but if she screws up
again I am sure they will move to dismiss her. She has a therapist
and a psychiatrist who prescribes anti-depressants for her, but they haven't
helped in our relationship. The medical bills I have now because she won't take her insulin is over $2,000, money I had put away to pay for her tuition next fall. Her dad and I told her that if she doesn't get her diabetes under control, we would not support her going back to the dorm next year. Well, that's exactly where we are now.

For an otherwise intelligent young woman, she's behaving stupidly, putting her health in jeopardy. She's completely freaking out, and I don't know how to repair the situation. Her doctors told me they want her to check in to a rehab facility for 4-6 weeks to get her diabetes under control and figure out why she's sabotaging herself so badly. But she doesn't want to go, and our insurance won't cover it. Anybody have any suggestions?

Is anybody at Brown University?

Looks like Aaron will be a freshman at Brown in the fall? Anyone there?

College Freshman T1's Fall 2012

Hey,

Just over a year ago I graduated from college. I've been a diabetic since my junior year of high school and ever since my diagnosis in 2005, I have been desperately trying to figure out a better system to carry around all of my supplies. As I'm sure many of you can agree, lugging around our pens, test kits, glucogons, etc. can be a HUGE PAIN. Especially if we're traveling, going out at night, or staying somewhere for a weekend. Not to mention, there are no products out there that are fun, fashionable, and practical that are made for women ages 18 and up!

I would love to have your help by hearing your opinions on what YOU think would make the IDEAL diabetes accessory and a little bit about your daily routine and the way your diabetes supplies impacts your preparation for the different activities that make up your life. All of your answers are confidential and are being used to help create a prototype for an online boutique opening within the year. It will be specializing in diabetes accessorizes and products for high school, college, and young women who want to take great care of themselves, manage their diabetes well, look great and feel confident while doing so!

Thank you so much for your help! And please feel free to contact me if you have any ideas, opinions, or questions outside of the survey!

Don't get lazy.

Telling People

I'm off to college in another city in a couple of weeks, and I'm concerned about the time period between arrival and making friends-- when did you tell people? I've heard that it's more important that your close group of friends know what to do. know the symptoms, etc. But I worry about sort of going it alone for a bit. Any advice?

Balzano and I am a fifth year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology program at Fordham University. I am writing to ask for help in recruiting participants for my doctoral dissertation research examining the sibling relationship, empathy, and interpersonal problems among adult siblings of individuals with Type I diabetes.

I was wondering if individuals would be willing to help distribute an email about my study, post it to a blog you might have, or distribute my study flyer at any support group meetings or events you might have. And, of course, if you have sibling(s) and Type 1 it would be great if you could pass this information to your sibling(s). Study participants are the non-diagnosed adult siblings of individuals with Type 1, but the best way to get in touch with these individuals has been through their diabetic siblings.

Study participation occurs electronically, takes 20-25 minutes, and is anonymous. I have pasted study information below. Information can also be found at: http://siblingresearchstudy.blogspot.com/
