JDRF Walk Team Spotlight: The Jack Pack

For the entire month of October, we are continuing to feature the JDRF Walk to
Cure Diabetes on our T1D Tuesday Blog! We will be interviewing Walk Team
Captains from around the country, who will share their experiences on
how they started their team and how they became successful at
fundraising.

Take it away Jack!

T1Nation: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Team Captain Jack:
My name is Jack. I’m 12 years old and in 6th grade.  I play soccer, football and act in musical theater.

T1Nation: If you are a member of TypeOneNation.org what is your screename?
Team Captain Jack: My mom is – JenniferMaricle

T1Nation: Who do you Walk for? When were they diagnosed and at what age?
Team Captain Jack: I walk for myself and all the others affected with type 1 because we really need to find a cure as soon as we can.  I was diagnosed Oct. 7, 2010, I was 9 years old.

T1Nation: What is your team name? How did you come up with the name?
Team Captain Jack: The Jack Pack.  My name is Jack and the pack is for my friends that always come and walk with me.  They are the coolest!

T1Nation: Where is your JDRF Walk location?
Team Captain Jack: Tulsa, Oklahoma

T1Nation: How many years have you participated in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes?
Team Captain Jack: 3 years

T1Nation: To date, how much has your team raised?
Team Captain Jack: Over $30,000.00

T1Nation: What do you love most about the event?
Team Captain Jack: It’s a really fun day that I can hang out with my friends.   It’s one of the few days that my type 1 is a good thing because it brings everyone together and it feels good to know I have so many people pulling for me and the cure!

T1Nation: Please share your tips on how others can get involved in joining/fundraising.  What has worked best for you?
Team Captain Jack: We always have a raffle and someone wins a great prize like a family vacation.  I try to tell all my friends, teachers, coaches about it and get everyone involved.  We also design really cool t-shirts and sell them at my school.  And I did some interviews with the local media to spread the word about the walk.
