October Advocacy Blog Highlights

Hi JDRF advocates!

October was a busy month here at JDRF Advocacy! Check out what you may have missed last month:

  • One of the biggest topics in October was the upcoming Type 1 Talk event. On October 6, Mike announced the launch of the Type 1 Talk application on Facebook. His post included an overview of the program, which is occurring on World Diabetes Day on November 14. Click here to check out the application on Facebook and host your own event! Melissa hosted some trainings on the Facebook application throughout the month. If you missed the scheduled trainings and would like information on using the application, just leave me a note below in the comments.

Thinking about hosting an event? Guest blogger Hallie Addington shared the reasons she is hosting a Type 1 Talk event and why you should too. Learn what her reasons for hosting are here!

We also gave advocates the chance to participate in choosing what will be on the agenda for the Type 1 Talk presentation on USTREAM. The broadcast is scheduled from 3-4 pm EDT on November 14. After an enormous amount of input from advocates like you, we announced the presentation topics last week! Click here to view the winning topics.

Many of you had questions concerning hosting a Type 1 Talk event, so Mike addressed those questions via video. Melissa will also be hosting two Q&A sessions on Type 1 Talk event/logistics. If you would like to join, click here to check out the scheduled times.

  • After we extended the Children’s Congress application deadline, we found out that some families were having issues submitting an application. We didn’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to apply to be a CC11 delegate, so for a brief period we provided a way for families to follow up with JDRF staff for technical support.

We also gave you a chance to get to know our Children’s Congress Facebook contest winner! Be sure to check out her video here.

  • Campbell Hutton announced an exciting public meeting held by the FDA that will be occurring on November 10. The meeting will address the artificial pancreas technologies. Find out the meeting details and how you can register here.
  • In October we additionally focused on how JDRF Advocacy can better help you. Please visit Mike’s blog post addressing the subject and tell us how we can be more relevant in your daily life.

Mike also provided a link to a fascinating article which was brought to our attention by diabetes blogger Scott Strange. The article focused on controlling A1C levels through peer support. Find out how this relates to our advocacy efforts and provide your feedback here.

  • Finally, we provided you with a post to learn more about Lorraine Stiehl, the National Volunteer Chair for Grassroots Advocacy. Learn about Lorraine and her involvement with JDRF here.

Be sure to stay tuned to our blog during the month of November. We have many exciting activities ahead, ranging from Type 1 Talk to the Special Diabetes Program renewal! As always, please feel free to leave me a note in the ‘Comments’ section below if you have a question or comment.
